Bicycle Access through Road Closures

When local streets are closed for traffic management purposes, it is very important to maintain bicycle access. [This example is from Shenton Park, a suburb in Perth, Western Australia.]
Good Features:
  • Provides usable bike access.
Not so Good Features:
  • Grab rail in centre of path presents a hazard to cyclists and makes wheelchair access difficult.
  • Heavy growth of bushes restrict sight-lines.
  • Mountable kerb has been used instead of a properly graded kerb ramp. Although this has been partially remedied with a wedge of bitumen, the slope is still greater than the recommended 1 in 8.
  • Better still, gap could be at road level so that no ramps are required.
