Bicycle Access through Road Closures

When local streets are closed for traffic management purposes, it is very important to maintain bicycle access. [This example is from Como,a suburb in Perth, Western Australia.]
Good Features:
  • The road surface is continuous through the closure.
  • Effective use of posts to prevent access by other vehicles.
Not so Good Features:
  • Path is too narrow.
  • Grab rail in centre of path is a hazard to cyclists.
  • Disabled users in wheelchairs could not get past the central grab rail.
  • Concrete kerbing is too high - pedals could hit the kerbing.
