Bicyle User Groups (BUGs)

What is a BUG?

BUG is short for Bicycle User Group, simply a group of cyclists who encourage provision of better cycling facilities in their local area. A BUG usually works closely with the local government authority to improve the safety and convenience of cycling to work, to schools, to shops and other local destinations.

Through a BUG, you can help improve cycling conditions by:

  • identifying locations for bicycle parking rails,
  • surveying potential bicycle routes,
  • taking staff from your local council for a ride so that they can experience cycling conditions first hand,
  • reporting hazards on roads and paths, or
  • writing letters of thanks when Council does something good.

The all new Go Cycle Amazing Albany map is now hot off the printing press. This guide to exploring Albany (in the Great Southern, WA) depicts some iconic scenic routes in addition to shared use paths, quiet cycle-friendly roads and Cycle Friendly Businesses.

It was developed by volunteer members of the Albany Bicycle Users Group (ABUG) and printed using funding from the City of Albany and the Department of Planning and Infrastructure.

The map was recently launched at the inaugural Bicycle Treasure Hunt in Albany. This event was also organised by volunteer ABUG members with assistance from a number of key community groups. It was a great success with over 120 participants enjoying the hunt, and all saying they’d be lining up for it in 2008!

Albany Bicycle Users Group (ABUG) was formed in early 2006 and has taken an active role in promoting cycling in Albany and encouraging local government to provide better cycling facilities. The development of the Go Cycle Amazing Albany map is one such example.

The map project was devised following a community cycling forum conducted by ABUG in 2006 to determine the community’s thoughts about issues relating to cycling in the region. The map was identified as a key strategy to aid community members in identifying cycling facilities in Albany.
